General Information
Due to the high volumes of applications on hand, processing times for driving licences and learner permits are longer than normal and are at least three weeks in most cases. You should also allow up to 5 working days for delivery by An Post. There is no need to contact the NDLS during this time. We apologise for any inconvenience caused by this delay.
Please note that exchange of foreign licences to an Irish licence will take longer to process as the licence entitlements have to be verified by the country that issued it. In exceptional circumstances, this can take up to 3 months.
NOTE: When you make an application for renewal or exchange you will be issued with a receipt which you should carry with you to confirm you are in the process of renewal or exchange. You will continue to be fully licensed to drive for the period of the application process for renewals and on exchange provided the original licence submitted for exchange is current and valid.
The NDLS cannot book, cancel or amend an appointment over the phone or email. You must book/cancel your appointment here.
Driving Licence and Learner Permit Extension
Expiry dates on some driving licences and learner permits have been automatically extended. Check to see if your permit or licence is due for renewal. in our expiry calculator here. Please note you can only renew your licence or permit within 3 months of the expiry date.
