Driving Licence and Learner Permit Extension

Driving licences that expired from the 1st March to the 31st August 2020 have been automatically extended by seven months in total.

Learner permits that expired from the 1st March to the 30th June 2020 were automatically extended by four months and have been further extended by an additional four months.
For learner permits expiring between 1 July and 31 October 2020 (including those already extended), the validity period of those permits will be automatically extended for a further four-month period.

Remember, you cannot apply for a renewal of your licence or learner permit more than 3 months before the date of expiry of your current licence/permit so please ensure your licence/permit is within the 3 month renewal window.

General Information

• Please note that if you have applied for your licence at an NDLS centre, your licence should be processed within 5 to 9 working days. You should allow an additional 2-5 working days for delivery by An Post. Therefore you do not need to contact the NDLS if you have only made your application in the last three weeks. If you have not received your licence or permit three weeks from the date you visited the NDLS centre please contact the NDLS by email. Please note exchanges of foreign licences to an Irish licence will take longer to process as the licence entitlements have to be verified.

• If you have applied for an exchange of your foreign licence please be aware that in exceptional circumstances this may take up to 3 months as your licence has to be verified by the country that issued it.
